A disturbing video which appears to show a woman being stripped naked and sexually assaulted in Egypt's Tahrir Square has been widely viewed and shared - and has provoked outrage and anger among many on social media. Although many internet users initially thought the video showed events from Sunday, the video appears to have been first uploaded on 4 June - the day after official results from the presidential election were announced. The original video was removed from YouTube due to its graphic nature, and an amended version was re-uploaded on Sunday. It has been watched more than , times. It shows a woman with blood on her body being stripped naked and surrounded by men. She is then escorted to an ambulance. Egyptian blogger Nervana Mahmoud called the incident "despicable", and "another reminder that Egypt has a long way to address its violence against women".

Christian men cannot marry Muslim women in Egypt unless they convert to Islam first, but Muslim men can marry Christian women. An affair between a Christian man and a Muslim woman takes such sectarian sensitivities to a much higher and more dangerous level and can often lead to violence if found out.
