The world of ballet has long been criticised for having a problem with diversity. But could one small quirk be a symbol of the barriers facing non-white dancers, asks Kirstie Brewer. Ballet dancer Eric Underwood was on tour last summer in the south of Italy when he had finally had enough. He's black, and as a soloist for the Royal Ballet often needs to wear flesh-coloured shoes for his performances. But walk into a ballet store and the only options are beiges and pinks. There is usually nothing for non-white ballet dancers. The pancaking ritual proved to be a particular headache in Italy - with the heat, and the inconvenience of carting around enough make-up. Underwood uses shoes for up to four days but many dancers get only a single performance before discarding them.

A lap dance or contact dance is a type of erotic dance performance offered in some strip clubs in which the dancer typically has body contact with a seated patron. Lap dancing is different from table dancing , in which the dancer is close to a seated patron, but without body contact. With lap dancing, the dancer may be nude , topless or scantily dressed, depending on the laws of the jurisdiction and the club's policies. With full-contact lap dances, the stripper may engage in non-penetrative sexual contact with the patron, such as " grinding " or " twerking " his or her body against the patron. Variant terms include couch dance , which is a lap dance where the customer is seated on a couch. In some places, a "block session" of lap dances usually a half an hour to an hour can be booked in a " champagne room " or "VIP room", which is a private room usually located in the back of a club. In many clubs, the duration of a lap dance is measured by the length of the song being played by the club's DJ. Charges for lap dances vary significantly.
Now she wants to overhaul the industry from within. W hen Georgina Pazcoguin was 19 years old, she went to see a doctor about her thighs. And so, following a recommendation from a friend, she visited the office of one Dr Wilcox, who told her she should consume no more than calories a day — the recommended number for the average woman is closer to 2, — and gave her some sealed packets of powder. For the next four months, she subsisted on the powder, plus a single chicken breast and two pounds of spinach or lettuce, which would make up her evening meal. But I am not an ectomorph. As a dancer you are staring at your body all day long in a mirror.
